Tutorial 2

For my second Tutorial I wanted to discuss what I have already written to see if I'm going in the right direction. The feedback I received was useful as it has helped me to thin about the structure of the essay. It was suggested to changed the introduction round and have the paragraph about perception come after what the statement of what the essay aims to achieve. I just need to continue with writing at the moment then once I feel I have enough written about the theories of organisation I can start to think about the practical side. At the moment I have a rough idea of what I want to design. I am thinking of creating a website that uses the theories in the layout to show the synthesis between the writing and practical.

Updated Working Title and Initial Structure

How can theories of perception inform website design?

After some thought I realised that I need to change the focus of my title from editorial to web design. I have decided to do this because I realised editorial design is not where my interests lie. Know I have changed the focus to website design I feel a lot clearer on what I need to do.

In order to make a start I have made a rough guide of the structure to give me some areas to research. This is only a starting point so it expand and change naturally as I find out more information.

Tutorial 1

I had my first dissertation tutorial today and I now have a better title and some areas to explore. For the next tutorial I have been asked to try and have a structure to my writing and have a good idea of what I will be making for the practical side.

Updated Working Title:

How can theories of perception inform layout design?

Tuesday, 21 October 2014

Before I can start to write and plan my practical side I need to have a good understanding of the theories relating to the subject so I can apply what I am writing about by experimenting with the layout.

Cop Presentation

My presentation didn't go to well as I didn't explain my idea very clearly but after after talking to Richard one on one I go some good feedback to help me get going with the project.

I have been told to re-think my title but the underlining idea is ok and can be used. It was suggested to split the writing into two sections, the first have will cover the theory and psychology as there will be a lot to write about this and the second could be a case study of three images from different time periods. This will allow for historical links and analysis of the theory into practice.

What I need to do from now is to read and study the theories to make sure I have a strong understanding of what they mean and how to use them so I can start to plan the practical side and apply them through out the design process.

Organising Your Research Project

Methodologies & Critical Analysis

how to the information you have found is...

Need to clearly evidence why you selected the methods of gathering information and why they are most appropriate for your study.

-can help to decide upon the methods you use
-Alternatively the material you find may suggest the appropriate theories

Chose at least one key theory that relates to my material

each theory will have own agenda

How am I going to go about this, what theories and methods will I use to maximise results?

Will the practical side be my methodology?

1 Methods
2 Theories
3 Application

1.Make decisions about how to collect and order information

2.Choose a relevant theoretical stand point

3. Apply these to your study

4. Explicitly outline this in the introduction. Address suggested failings in the conclusion

Critical Analysis:

-evaluating material based on evidence and research and making a selection on an informed decision

-Skeptical approach

-Reasoned thinking: stepping away and using evidence and logic to come to your conclusions

Awareness of perspectives

Where was the author/ artist/ designer/ situated ?

try to consider different points of view

Where am I coming from?

-how is my choice of topic influenced by my emotions; aspirations; context?

Context is everything!

consider the influence of one or more of the following:
the time, place, society, politics, economics, technology, philosophy, scientfic

-What is the evidence for what you are saying?
-Could you find more evidence to support your conclusions?

-What do I want to say?
-Have I got the evidence to back it up?
-Where else do I need to look in order to find more evidence?

-Pitting alternative theories against the same body of data

Am I expressing myself clearly and logically

A clear logical plan

-keep it simple, refine what you want to say and focus on a few key issue

-Look into your key issues in depth and bring in the maximum evidence in to support your views

-Discuss your issues and the evidence you have found in a clear and logical manner

-Move form the general to the specific

Resolving your Research Project and Academic Conventions

What are you going to address and how are you going to address it?

Academic conventions- structure and standardise, aspire to academic honesty

expected to:

Demonstrate critical knowledge of practice

apply theory to practice

analyse relevant material

evaluate theory and evidence within the context of study

reflect- critiquing and critically reflecting on your learning and using this to improve practice

Avoid a surface approach!!!

Challenge ideas an unpick them

Deep Approach:

bring in own ideas and opinions

relate theory and research to own experience and knowledge

structured around logic and thinking

ongoing process of reflection

intelectual engagement- evidence on blog!

show understanding of technical language

have to evidence points from engagement from research

make argument and back it up

concise and direct style of writing

Avoid abbreviations and contractions, slang words and phrases, conversational terms and vague terms

Working Title

A historical and theoretical analysis of form and space. The conscious use of negative space and structural systems within graphic design.

I am really interested in visual perception and the psychology behind it so I want to write about the different theories and methods used in graphic design. For the practical part of the module I am going to design a magazine that uses the theories within the layout. The content will be based on the interpretation of "balance," for example, different philosophies, articles, poems.....all based on the theme of balance.
